university teaching - courses taught

Introduction to Art - Art practices and traditions of the present and the past, criticism and aesthetics from the viewpoint of the artist. Discussions by artists and gallery visits included.

Introduction to Art History - A survey of visual culture from prehistoric times to the present.

North American Indigenous Art History - A survey of North American Indian art from prehistory to the present. Analysis of styles in their historical context, development of the specialist's vocabulary.

Early Canadian Indigenous Art History - A course investigating the change in Indian art styles and media as the result of European contact in Canada.

Indigenous Art and the 20th (& 21st)Century - A course examining twentieth-century Indigenous art. Politics, revolution, education, and economic issues of Canada, USA, and Mexico are considered as affecting stylistic developments.

Post 1945 Contemporary Art Histories (co-taught with Dr. Clive Robertson) - This course will examine the histories, meanings and sites of contemporary art in the metropolitan West from 1945 to the present. Students will become familiar not only with the works themselves, but with shifts in critical conceptions and popular media that affect both the production and reception of contemporary art.

Modern & Contemporary Art History - A selective examination of issues in Canadian art history and historical practice, especially as they inform the production and critique of the history of Canadian art.

Canadian Art and Cultural Identity - Art in Canada from the colonial period to the present. Students will be introduced to issues of culture, ethnicity and gender, in relation to the Canadian context.

Three Dimensional Foundation (studio) - This foundation studio course provides undergraduate students with an introduction to the principles, processes, and vocabulary of three-dimensional art practices. Students will develop a practical understanding of sculpture, installation, site-specificity, performance, and socially engaged practices.

Introduction to Intermedia (studio) - An introduction to the theoretical framework and practical application of Intermedia practice, involving several of the following: time-based electronic and digital media, performance art, artist's books and installation.

Installation and New Media (studio) (co-taught with Kathleen Sellars) - An introduction to the theoretical framework and practical application of Intermedia practice, involving several of the following: time-based electronic and digital media, performance art, artist's books and installation.
